I teach historical embroidery and have recommended this book to my students. A walk along the university library shelves on textiles reveals a patchwork of brightly-coloured, patterned book spines. Exemplum Samplers - The isle of Wight's only on line resource for Antique Samplers. There is an increasing interest now in practices that engage with real people and communities. He found painting ‘didn’t satisfy in the way that textiles did’ and when he does paint he paints ‘as an embroiderer’ - putting in the detail, drawing over the top; so he is ‘more confident and happier articulating through textiles.’ His drawings become the basis of the printed fabric that is his starting point, ‘then I respond to it and make it become the thing that it is meant to be.’ It is an art process with cloth as the starting point rather than a design process with cloth as the end point, Figure 7.22.
